Sudoku vs Crossword — Which Daily Puzzle Is Better for Your Brain?

What each puzzle trains

Crosswords primarily exercise verbal memory and word retrieval. Sudoku trains working memory, pattern recognition, and logical deduction. They use mostly distinct cognitive systems.

The research

The PROTECT study (Exeter, 2019) followed 19,000 adults over 50 doing daily puzzles. Findings: crossword players scored slightly better on verbal tasks; Sudoku players scored better on tasks measuring executive function and short-term memory. Both groups outperformed non-puzzlers on most measures.

Which is harder to start?

Crosswords have a learning curve — clues use idiom, wordplay, and cultural references that take years to internalize. Sudoku is rules-only and language-independent. A 7-year-old can play, even if slowly.

Which is more satisfying?

Personal preference. Sudoku has a clear "solved" moment; crosswords often end with a slow grind on the last two clues. Sudoku is more meditative; crosswords are more verbal-puzzle-game.

Do both

If you have 15 minutes a day, do one of each. The cognitive load is complementary, not competitive.
